School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships

Undertaking an Australian School-based Apprenticeship and Traineeship is a great way for students who want to get a head start on their career path. 

What are Australian School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships?

Australian School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships allow students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to work with an employer as a paid employee, while completing their Senior Phase of Learning.  At the same time, students undertake a nationally recognised training qualification with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) chosen by both the employer and the student.  Students would usually expect to achieve a Certificate II or Certificate III on completion of their traineeship or apprenticeship.

As an Australian School-based Apprentice or Trainee the student:

• Must still be attending school;
• Must be enrolled in either Years 10, 11 or 12 and progressing towards the attainment of a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) or equivalent or for a vocational qualification;
• Must be employed for a minimum of 50 days every 12 months;
• Must undertake some part of the qualification (ie. either training or work) during normal school hours;
• Will normally work one set day per week, with the option of working after school hours, on weekends and during school holidays;
• Can still obtain a Senior Statement and achieve an Overall Position (OP) or an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

School-Based Apprenticeships traditionally focus on trade-based industries, such as electrical, building and construction, cooking, automotive, hairdressing and engineering.  School-based Traineeships generally cover all other industries that do not require a trade certificate such as business, retail, hospitality, IT, tourism and many more.
